Dive Knife Safety
Recent events
have led me to adding a safety section dedicated to diving knives.
Two young men were out spear fishing when one of the men became
entangled in the shooting line of his spear gun after spearing
a fish. Neither man had a knife. By the time the fire department
responded it was too late.
People ask all
the time what do I need a knife for? My response is my knife is
one of my most utilized pieces of equipment. First and foremost
for cutting free of entanglement, but also for dispatching struggling
fish after they've been speared to avoid attracting sharks. People
have been known to avoid shark attacks by utilizing their knives
as a method of defense. A knife can be used for cutting chum/burley
to attract certain species of predatory fish. Some divers even
use their polished stainless knives as a lure to attract fish.
Knife size and
shape are important considerations but the knife sheath is also
very important. A smaller knife that can fit on the arm is ideal
for:
1. Less
chance of cutting or stabbing yourself
2. Easy visibility
3. Easy access
4. Sharp
point (best)
5. Line cutter
(best)
A larger knife
located on the thigh is ideal for:
1. Dispatching
large fish
2. Safer
distance for defense
3. Sharp
point (best)
4. Line cutter
(best)
Wearing one of
each while diving is ideal.
